Business website & visibility guide
Why Your Business Is Not Appearing on Google Maps
First distinguish two problems: your business cannot be found even by its exact name, or it appears by name but not for a general service search. A missing profile and a low-ranking profile need different checks.
Step 1: Search for the exact business
Search Google Maps for the real business name and location. If a listing exists, check its phone, website and address against your records. You may be looking at an old listing, duplicate or profile owned by a former staff member.
Do not immediately create a second profile. First recover or request access to the correct existing one. Keep business ownership with the owner’s account and grant management access where needed.
Step 2: Check ownership and verification
Open the account that manages the profile and review the status Google shows. A profile may need verification or reverification before its information is fully available. Verification methods and required evidence are controlled by Google and can vary by business.
Use the available verification process and supply accurate evidence. If Google is reviewing an update, monitor its status rather than repeatedly changing unrelated fields. Creating duplicates is not a reliable shortcut.
Step 3: Confirm eligibility and location
Google Business Profiles are generally for businesses that make in-person contact with customers. An online-only business is not automatically eligible simply because it has a website. A real storefront and a business that travels to customers have different address-display requirements.
A service-area contractor who does not receive customers at the business address should hide that address and specify the actual service area. Do not use a virtual office, false address or a borrowed location to try to appear in another city. Follow Google’s current eligibility rules.
Step 4: Look for restrictions or duplicate listings
If the profile is suspended or disabled, read the reason and correct the underlying issue before using Google’s appeal process. Prepare genuine business documents if requested. A website edit alone will not restore a restricted profile.
If two profiles represent the same business, investigate ownership and duplicate handling before deleting anything. Listings for genuinely separate businesses or eligible practitioners can require different treatment. Use Google’s support guidance rather than assuming every similar name is a duplicate.
Step 5: If it appears by name, review local relevance
When your profile exists but does not show for “plumber Ipoh” or another service query, visibility may be a ranking issue. Check whether the primary category accurately describes the main business, your services are clear and your hours, phone and website are complete.
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. A service area does not remove the effect of distance. Adding keywords to the business name or expanding the service area beyond actual operations is not a sound fix.
Add genuine business photos, request honest reviews from real customers and reply helpfully. Use your website to explain services and provide real project evidence. These are useful business improvements, not guarantees of a top-three Maps position.
A checklist before asking for help
- Can the exact business name and location be found?
- Which Google account owns the correct profile?
- Is verification complete, pending or required again?
- Is there a suspension, restriction or duplicate warning?
- Are the category, address rules, phone, hours and website accurate?
- Does the website explain the same services and business information?
For an Ipoh or Malaysian business, BP Trade Solutions can review Google Business Profile setup alongside SEO, AEO & GEO and website development. Send the profile link and a description of the issue so we can distinguish access, eligibility and ranking problems.
